the novel Time Traveler’s Wife Written by Audrey Niveniger drew readers away in 2003, and inspired the well-received 2009 film adaptation starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. Stephen Moffat, the famous model behind Doctor from And Sherlockhas now Bestselling story adaptation as a series on HBO, which premieres on Sunday, May 15th. Critics had a chance to showcase the six-episode series, and there was a side of the plot that they couldn’t glimpse into the past in what could be one of the most embarrassing releases of any The TV show premiered in 2022.
Rose Leslie and Theo James star as Claire Abshire and Henry de Temple, a married couple whose relationship is complicated by Henry’s uncontrollable time travel disorder, which causes him to navigate different eras in Claire’s life, which are set on a path Linear timeline. The case that many critics do not seem to look beyond revolves around Henry’s tendency to appear in Claire’s life as a naked adult man when Claire was still a child. But even with this watered-down context, it’s not entirely comforting to watch 20-year-old Claire relentlessly explain to 28-year-old Henry when their schedules finally converge that her sexual desires have formed around him and “everything you personally, made me agree to Desire.And no, admitting embarrassment with a sneaky “grooming” joke when Claire is six doesn’t make it awkward.
Linda Holmes NPR Says Time Traveler’s Wife It has an appeal in the “totally practical” chemistry of Rose Leslie and Theo James, but this line may simply be better on the page than on screen:
It’s hard to imagine what one would do to make this more palatable – would it work better if the crying was more, if it was darker, or if it was shorter or longer. It may be as though monsters are often more frightening in the book than they can be when they become physically real, the slippery idea of a man from the future telling a very young woman that he is her future husband is more exciting when in reality she sees it than it might be in the summary .
Richard Roper Chicago Sun Times He rated the series 1.5 out of 4 stars, saying that the series left him confused, as it “bleeds with horror” and doesn’t produce the humor intended from the rom-com. Roeper’s review also notes that multiple Henrys can exist in one timeline, which makes some silly settings:
“It’s complicated,” Henry and Claire have said more than once, and it’s also a problem. When Henry is 35 and Claire is 12, and they hang out and play checkers in the field, it’s more grotesque than charming, especially after Henry lets her escape from their marriage one day.

In 2022, after the #MeToo, Jeffrey Epstein, and Woody Allen scandals, when everyone knows better, a show that hinges on an adult meeting a kid in the woods (Everleigh McDonell and Caitlin Shorey playing little Claire) shouldn’t be made.
